Liverpool Reject Surprise January Offer for Darwin Nunez
Liverpool has firmly stated that they have “no intention” of selling Darwin Nunez before the transfer window closes, despite a surprise approach for the striker.
Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica for an initial £64m, with the total deal potentially rising to £85m, making him the club’s most expensive signing. However, his performances have been inconsistent during his time at Anfield, leading to mixed opinions about his future at the club.
The 25-year-old has scored just four goals in the Premier League this season, which has raised some questions, especially since Liverpool is currently leading the league. Nunez has been used sparingly, starting fewer than a third of Liverpool’s league games under manager Arne Slot.
Despite this, Liverpool has no plans to sell Nunez in January, even after Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr reportedly showed interest. According to The Athletic, Liverpool is confident Nunez will play an important role in their title challenge this season.
However, his long-term future at Liverpool is still uncertain. With his potential to attract interest from other clubs, Liverpool may consider selling him in the summer, especially if a suitable offer arrives.
Nunez has had a mixed season, scoring just one goal since November, but he recently made a significant impact by scoring two goals in injury-time against Brentford, helping secure a 2-0 win. Despite his recent contribution, Liverpool legends like Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher have expressed doubts about his fit at the club. Fowler stated that Nunez, despite his hard work, might not be suited to Liverpool’s style of play.
Carragher also raised concerns, mentioning that while Nunez’s pace worked in Jurgen Klopp’s high-energy system, he struggles under Slot’s more measured approach. Carragher admitted he would consider selling Nunez if a good offer came in, but acknowledged the risks due to Diogo Jota’s injury-prone status.
Liverpool is reportedly interested in signing new forwards like Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface or Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, who has been linked with several top clubs.
Liverpool, now six points clear at the top of the Premier League, will wrap up their Champions League group stage against PSV on Wednesday.
Overall, while Nunez’s future at Liverpool remains unclear, for now, the club is focused on the present season and believes he will play a key role in the push for the title.
