Arsenal Players Criticized for Poor Performances Amid Growing Concerns Over Mikel Arteta’s Job

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been warned that two of his players could end up costing him his job after disappointing performances in their recent 2-0 loss to Newcastle United.

The Gunners have had a tough start to the 2024/25 season, trailing behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race. With hopes of winning the title slipping away, Arteta’s side is now looking to secure a trophy this season, but their chances in the Carabao Cup took a hit after the defeat to Newcastle in the semi-final’s first leg.

Goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon sealed the victory for Newcastle, with Isak particularly impressive. His performance highlighted Arsenal’s ongoing need for a top-quality striker, something they have struggled with this season.

Craig Burley, a former Chelsea midfielder, pointed out a “major problem” for Arsenal. He believes that the performances of Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus could cost Arteta his job if they don’t improve. Burley noted that despite Arsenal controlling possession with 69-70%, they struggled in the final third, failing to break down Newcastle’s defense.

Burley compared Arsenal’s attack to Liverpool’s, saying that while Liverpool has multiple players who can score in key moments, Arsenal lacks that depth. He stressed that unless Arteta addresses this issue, it could ultimately cost him his position as manager.

Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney also criticized Havertz and Jesus, accusing them of “going missing” during the game. He explained that their predictable playstyle was easily shut down by Newcastle’s solid defense, which showed Arsenal’s lack of creativity in breaking down defensive lines.

As the season progresses, Arteta and his team will need to find solutions to these attacking issues if they want to stay in the race for titles and keep the pressure off their manager.
