Lee Dixon Criticizes Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber After Anthony Gordon Scores for Newcastle
Lee Dixon criticized Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber after Anthony Gordon’s goal helped Newcastle extend their lead to 2-0 in a Carabao Cup semi-final match against Arsenal. Dixon highlighted Timber’s slow reaction to the rebound after Gordon capitalized on a missed save from Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya.
Newcastle took the lead in the first half when Alexander Isak scored in the 37th minute, bringing his total goals to 14 for the season. Six minutes into the second half, Raya stopped Isak’s shot, but Gordon was quick to score the rebound, leaving Timber behind.
Dixon, speaking on ITV, said: “Timber was too slow to react to the rebound. A full-back needs to follow that in, and Gordon did, scoring the second goal. Now, Arsenal has a tough challenge ahead.”
He also pointed out that following the rebound should be a simple task for a player of Timber’s ability: “It’s basic for a full-back to follow the ball in that situation,” Dixon added.
Despite the loss, Gordon remained focused on the next leg, telling ITV, “It’s not time to celebrate yet. There’s still another 90 minutes to play.” He also praised Isak’s form, calling him one of the best strikers in Europe right now.
Newcastle’s win was their seventh consecutive victory, and Gordon praised the team’s effort, especially defender Dan Burn, who he named as his player of the season.
Arsenal’s Struggles Continue
This defeat means Arsenal has not won in their last two matches, following a 1-1 draw with Brighton in the Premier League. They will be hoping to bounce back when they face Manchester United in the FA Cup this weekend.
