Man Utd LGBTQ Group Upset After Players Skip Rainbow Jackets for Inclusivity Game

An LGBTQ fan group for Manchester United, called Rainbow Devils, has shared its disappointment after the team’s players chose not to wear rainbow-themed jackets designed to support the LGBTQ community during Sunday’s match against Everton.

The jackets were planned as part of the club’s Rainbow Laces game, an event promoting inclusion and equality. However, the team decided not to wear them after one player refused, citing personal religious beliefs.

Why the Jackets Were Not Worn

In a statement, Rainbow Devils explained that they were informed of the decision shortly before the game:

“One of the players declined to wear the jacket due to personal beliefs. To maintain team unity, it was decided that none of the players would wear them.”

The group expressed disappointment, saying this decision let down everyone who worked hard to organize the event. Despite this, they emphasized their respect for individual opinions and committed to continuing their work with the club on inclusion through initiatives like One Love.

Man Utd’s Response

Manchester United defended its commitment to diversity and inclusion, highlighting its support for LGBTQ+ fans while acknowledging players’ rights to hold personal views.

“Manchester United welcomes fans from all backgrounds, including members of the LGBTQ+ community. We remain committed to diversity and inclusion,” the club said in a statement. “Players are entitled to their personal beliefs, even if they differ from the club’s position.”

The club has not named the player who declined to wear the jacket.

Similar Incidents in Football

A similar situation occurred with Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy, a practising Muslim, who opted out of wearing a rainbow armband during recent matches. Ipswich Town supported his decision, stating:

“We proudly back the Rainbow Laces campaign and stand for equality and acceptance. At the same time, we respect our captain’s decision, based on his religious beliefs.”

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi also expressed his faith by writing “I love Jesus” and “Jesus loves you” on his armband during recent matches.

Moving Forward

Despite setbacks, LGBTQ groups and football clubs continue to work toward greater inclusion. Events like Rainbow Laces serve as reminders of the ongoing need for open dialogue between diverse communities, players, and clubs.
